I found and tested this out myself. Using a Yahoo mail account I have had since 1998, I went into Gmail and used the Gmail options to transfer all my old email from the Yahoo account into Gmail.

On the con side… it did import a massive amount of spam email from Yahoo.

This was AFTER I had deleted every last spam in the account. However, it took a few days for the import and during that time yet more spam gathered. So not only did I get the old email I wanted but also all the latest junk I could have happily done without.

On the pro/ plus side… it worked!!!

I tried to find a way to import old email from Yahoo a couple of years ago. Yahoo had blocked any options (unless you paid for a premium account with them). I didn’t want a paid account when all I wanted was my existing email. I have not used that account in quite a bit longer than ten years. So, paying for it seemed nonsense. (Especially due to the more than average amount of junk/ spam which flooded in to an account inactive for son long).

Gmail let me know when the Yahoo transfer was complete. There was a note at the top of my Gmail account, highlighted in yellow. Everything imported over was labelled with the Yahoo email address. That made it easy to find. At first I thought all I had was the spam. There were 6,000+ imported emails. I had cleaned the account and left about 300 emails to be imported over. I had to dig and scroll to find the email I wanted to keep. Luckily, Gmail lets you select unread emails. I used that feature to select and delete the junk. This left the older emails alone.

So, you can save old email from Yahoo Mail and not have to pay for it. Next I’m getting my Mother to do the same. One thing you do need to do – pull all your emails into the InBox and out of all folders. Anything in folders will not be imported (according to the directions in the post on WikiHow).

Note: Not everything was exactly as WikiHow reported it. Maybe the procedure was updated since that article was posted. It was actually simpler and if you follow along with the instructions in the pop-up window from Gmail you will do fine.

Yahoo! Profiles (and Avatars) are Going Away

Yahoo! is phasing out their Profiles. You can’t look up someone else and, I couldn’t even find my own to see what I had written about myself. (Though Yahoo! recommends I save anything in my “About Me” and “My Interests”, I can’t even get my profile to load up at all).

I thought I would look up my Yahoo Avatar but that put me back on the “Going Away” page for Profiles. So, it seems the Avatars are also going away.

Maybe Yahoo is using logic in removing things which have not been greatly used. But, I think they have it wrong.

Why not bring the Yahoo Profiles and Avatars into the new world of social media instead?

Connect Profiles and Avatars to Tumblr and Flickr. How much more colourful and interesting they could have made those sites/ services with the addition of the Avatars and an expanded profile. Yahoo Profiles (with it’s long running database of users) could have rivalled for giving people a profile page to connect all your accounts and people in one place.

So why didn’t anyone at Yahoo do this?

I don’t know. But, it does seem Yahoo prefers to buy and then bail out on a lot of sites and services. There must be some business or marketing sense to it, I hope. I don’t see it. I do see what could have been wonderful as a web profile being lost instead. For no great reason other than taking the slow road to nowhere.

I looked at Yahoo Groups this week, just out of curiousity. At one time I ran email lists and newsletters through Yahoo Groups, when they were called something else and before then when they were MailCity and eGroups which were bought by Yahoo. But, the Groups are pretty silent now. Why aren’t bloggers using Yahoo Groups to run email lists? It’s free. It’s easy to set up and work with. It’s reliable… isn’t it? Hard to be sure when it looks so stagnant and neglected.

Why Yahoo!. Why?

I don’t want to see Yahoo! die. I’ve been watching them slip away for years though. No one seems to be excited about the possibilities any more. They almost seem content to slip into obscurity.

Declaring Email Bankruptcy!

On Dec. 31, I had 46,315 unread emails in my inbox. On my first day back to work in the new year, I had zero.

No, I didn’t spend two weeks replying to all those messages. I deleted them — without reading a single one — and declared what is known as email bankruptcy.

Am I a bad guy for ignoring those emails? Or are the senders somehow at fault? Probably a bit of both.

I didn’t delete every email in my inbox but I have stopped reading email each day. It is overwhelming in volume and uselessness. The few email from family and friends are drowned out in an ocean of newsletters, sales pitches and so on. Even the newsletters are thin disguises for sales pitches, marketing schemes. None of it is worth my time. It just frustrates me.

I have my phone number on the Do Not Call List. That cut down on the phone calls I get for services I never asked for or about. But, I still get the odd call, roughly three a week. There is no system in place, no Do Not Email List, for email.

Declaring email bankruptcy sounds like a good idea to me. But, I’d take it farther and delete the whole account, or at least empty all the past, present and begin to bounce all the future email sent to that account. If you set up filters on your email account which allowed only email from specific email addresses – how much quieter would your email be and how much time would you save in wading through junk mail?

The main reason I don’t want to delete my account is the address I have with Gmail. I don’t want to lose that. So, I can either set up filters to delete all email (but for family and friends) or begin using a different email account (a new address) which I only give to family and friends, the people I do want to hear from. Some people may set up a third account for business-only email. However, I have an ongoing case study with an email address I abandoned at Yahoo web mail over ten years ago. That account is still flooded with spam and junk email though I have not used it (other than logging into Yahoo services) for over ten years. So, an abandoned email account will remain toxic for a long time after you stop using it. Likely, the junk email will still be filling that account as long as there is still Internet access.

How do you handle junk email? Have you committed email bankruptcy once, or several times? Feels kind of good to dump it all, doesn’t it?

Horror Writers are Nice Girls Too

Writing horror is a unique experience. I have written horror and self published my horror writing. People have given me good feedback but I’ve yet to write something I feel really good about. So, I’m amateur horror writer. Still working on it.

I like the drama and the challenge of putting the things that really do scare me into words which will show someone else what really is scary. I don’t get scared by typical things: fictional monsters, serial killers and so on. No, the things that scare me are real and everyday like debt, job interviews and bumble bees that fly into my hair and keep buzzing around close to my head. The horror of deciding to hope the bee finds it’s own way out or risking getting your fingers stung while you try to get it out (before it stings your head or face) is a very real thing and something I have experienced.

It’s the real things that are scary, horrifying. Not the made up monsters. The only time a made up monster becomes frightening is when we talk ourselves into believing they are real, or could be real. It’s reality that really is the stuff of nightmares.

As a writer, I think writing horror makes you learn “show don’t tell” more than any other genre. An over narrated horror story will flat-line, fast!

Avatar-Making for your Online Profile

avatar makingAn avatar gives you a face when you fill out a profile online. There are endless places you can use an avatar on the web: email signatures, blog comments, forum profiles, HubPages or any other site you create an account on.

For this post I am focusing on sites which let you create the avatar online, from start to finish. You may need a screen capture software to save your finished avatar in an image file on your own computer. Go to the home site for your web browser and look up the add-ons. I use Chrome and Firefox (at different times) both of those have simple add-ons which let you use screen capture right from your web browser.

Many online game sites will give you an avatar when you sign up to play their game. This is another way to create an avatar, but it requires you to register for the site and have an account first. If you are not interested in playing the game you can still create an avatar and save it on your own computer, but you will have to take the time to register for the site, first.

Creating an Avatar with Your Own Art

The avatar can be an image of your own choosing. Use a photo you have taken. Your own art/ drawings in an image file (png, jpg or gif files) are great as avatars too.

Modify the image to fit the size you need. Most profiles will have a size limit. Some will have a limit for the pixels/ bandwidth of the image as well. There are web graphic programs which can resize an image. Some have features which let you add text, change colours and change the shape of the image, give it a different background and so on. You can use software such as Gimp, for image editing.

Globally Recognized Avatar

Once you have your avatar go to Gravatar and set up an account. This is a free online service which gives you a globally recognized avatar which will automatically show up when you comment on WordPress blogs or use various comment services and forums online.

A Just Looking Fee?

Here’s what the sign says:
As of the first of February, this store will be charging people a $5 fee per person for “just looking.”

The $5 fee will be deducted when goods are purchased.

Why has this come about?

There has been high volume of people who use this store as a reference and then purchase goods elsewhere. These people are unaware our prices are almost the same as the other stores plus we have products simply not available anywhere else.

This policy is line with many other clothing, shoe and electronic stores who are also facing the same issue.

I’m sure there will be a lot of protest against this. But, I do see the logic behind it. Here in Ontario we used to have a chain of wholesale/ retail stores called Consumer’s Distributing. I don’t know what happened to the stores, they went out of business years ago. I still think they had a near perfect business model. People would come to the store, look at the catalogue and write down the page number and the item number of the product they wanted. If there were extra things like colour or size you wrote that down as well. Then you brought your ticket/ note to the service desk. There were always a few people there and one would take your note and go into the warehouse to bring out what you wanted.  You could open it up from the packaging, take a look and make sure it was what you wanted. Then you paid for it and were done.

Stores now are becoming the catalogue for online shoppers. Not fair to them. Not something which will work out in the long range plan. So, I do understand a retail store trying to get people to shop and buy in the store rather than use the store like a catalogue or display, a place where they can deal with the store staff, have them open packaging and then leave the store without making a purchase. This leaves the store paying for staff, lights, insurance, and so on but not getting the sales which they rely on.

I actually shop the opposite way myself. I look at prices online, see what stores have listed and then I go to a real store to have a better look and at this point I almost always buy whatever I was looking at because I have already done my shopping around online. I prefer to buy from the brick and mortar store than the online stores. I like to really see what I’m buying before I open my wallet.

I Fixed My Yahoo! Account

Yahoo! Contributor NetworkI think… I finally got my Yahoo! account problem sorted out. By myself, with the additional help of the automatic bots. Yahoo! support was no help. Thanks for the all the form mails. NOT!

Anyway, the problem has been that I could not login to Yahoo! Contributor and I would like to be writing there. But, each time I tried to login I was told I already have an account on another Yahoo! account/ profile. This was frustrating because I could not merge the two accounts.

Yes, it would have been simple to just use the new account which was linked to Contributor BUT I use my Flickr account a lot and that was on the older Yahoo! account. So each time I would go to Flickr I would have to login again and then lose the other account which was kind of dorky and had a password too complicated for a human brain to remember.

So, this morning I decided to try again. First, I found the Yahoo! account look up. You just type in your email address and it will send you any account associated with that email address. Great. It sent me back 3 things, 2 were accounts and one was an email address at YMail. A bit confusing but I’m not a web newbie so I figured it out.

So, I went to Flickr and read the options with my account there. Very near the bottom it has an option to change the Yahoo! account associated with your Flickr account. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to do this before. I also don’t know why any of the support people at Yahoo! didn’t suggest this – likely none of them actually bothered to read my email because the replies they sent all came out of the same can.

Anyway, it is all working beautifully now. The one thing I did have to do was make sure I had closed all the web browser windows which I still had open using the old Yahoo! account. That was mucking things up until I realized I had missed one.

I also reactivated the Yahoo! email account which I had set up for that newer account. So, a bit complicated but situation resolved! Finally!
